Anna Wintour is resigning from her position as editor-in-chief of American Vogue

After holding the role for 37 years. Condé Nast, the magazine’s publisher, confirmed to CNN that the 75-year-old is looking for a successor. She informed her colleagues of the decision on Thursday.

Even though Wintour is stepping down from her editor-in-chief position, she will remain with Condé Nast, reducing her responsibilities instead. She will now assume the role of global chief content officer for the publisher and global editorial director for Vogue. The position that will fill her former role at the fashion magazine is now called head of editorial content.

The seasoned executive began her journey with the fashion publication in 1988 when she succeeded former editor-in-chief Grace Mirabella. Upon taking charge, she initiated a transformation of the magazine, turning it into a dominant force while establishing new trends and designs within the fashion industry.

Her debut cover, released in November 1988, showcased Israeli model Michaela Bercu wearing a $50 pair of jeans paired with a $10,000 Christian Lacroix sweater. Notably, this marked the first occasion that denim featured on a Vogue cover, as reported by People magazine.

Her reputation as a key figure in the fashion sector is believed to have influenced the creation of the iconic character Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, a novel penned by her former assistant, Lauren Weisberger.

This book was later made into a film of the same name starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in lead roles. In 2020, Wintour was appointed Condé Nast’s chief content officer, overseeing all its publications globally, including Vanity Fair, Wired, GQ, and Architectural Digest, among others.
