Jay North, famed for his role as TV’s Dennis the Menace, passed away at the age of 73

Jay North, on Sunday, after a long battle with cancer. His death was initially reported by close friend Jeannie Russell, who played Margaret Wade, Dennis’s companion on the show.

Other former child actors, including Barry Livingston from “My Three Sons” and Jon Provost from “Lassie,” shared their condolences, with Provost referring to him as an “original and dear friend.”

Born on August 3, 1951, in Hollywood, North became a household name by the age of 8 (with TV promoters advising him to claim he was a year younger) for his portrayal of the playful Dennis in the televised adaptation of the beloved comic strip.

The series ran from late 1959 until 1963, during which time his mother carefully preserved his earnings. He later criticized the actions of his aunt, whom he accused of both physical and emotional abuse, which complicated his feelings about his iconic role on the show.

As the show’s popularity waned, North found himself struggling after aging out of the industry. He made numerous guest appearances on television, often promoting “Dennis,” along with a few film projects, before facing difficulties.

He acted in “Zebra in the Kitchen” (1965) and “Maya” (1966), but then experienced a lengthy hiatus. During this time, he took part in dinner theater and lent his voice to Bamm-Bamm as a teenager in the animated series “Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show” (1971-1972).

His last leading role came in the suspense film “The Teacher” in 1974.

North served in the Navy and later made additional acting appearances, including a role on “General Hospital” (1982).

In 1988, he fell victim to one of the first significant death hoaxes; he later referenced this and other strange experiences as a former child star in the film “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star” in 2003.

Having been married three times, he is survived by his wife of over 30 years, Cindy, along with three stepdaughters.

‘Snow White’ premiere preparations are altered by Disney due to controversy

Story of ‘Snow White’

With the release of Snow White scheduled for March 15, Disney is reimagining the traditional Hollywood premiere format. According to Variety, the premiere will now take place at the El Capitan Theatre as a smaller red carpet event.

Media will have access to photographers and house crew, but there won’t be any press interviews, even if Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, the main performers, are anticipated to attend. This choice was made in the midst of the movie’s ongoing controversy.

Since her casting, Zegler, who portrays the title character, has been the subject of debate. Disney’s choice to use a Latina actor for the part has drawn criticism from both critics and audiences.

Adding fuel to the fire, Zegler previously described the 1937 animated feature as “outdated” and criticized its original plot, in which the prince “basically stalks Snow White.”

Additionally, actor Peter Dinklage’s remarks regarding the depiction of dwarfs have contributed to the controversy. In 2022, Dinklage stated on the WTF podcast, “It makes no sense to me.”

“You’re progressive in one aspect, yet you’re still presenting that outdated story about seven dwarfs living together in a cave. What the f— are you doing, man?”

Disney replied by stating, “To prevent reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated movie, we are adopting a different approach for these seven characters and have been in consultation with members of the dwarfism community.”

Political dynamics have added an extra layer of complexity to the discussions about Snow White. While Zegler has publicly expressed her support for Palestine, Gadot, the Israeli actress, has shown her backing for Israel, particularly after the Hamas attack on October 7.

The contrasting viewpoints have sparked online debates and calls to boycott the film. Regardless of the controversies, marketing efforts for Snow White continue to be strong.

The movie, directed by Marc Webb, is set to release on March 21.
