Apple iOS 26 beta 2025: The 13 key feature announcements

During its annual Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, Apple unveiled numerous significant updates to iOS 26 beta. The company showcased a modern design for its operating systems alongside a variety of new features for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods, and more.

Here’s a summary of some of the most thrilling advancements Apple revealed during the keynote.

Apple iOS 26 beta has started naming its operating systems based on the year

Apple has assigned new version numbers to each of its operating systems that align with the year of their release, replacing the previous versioning system. The new titles are iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26. They are set to launch in late 2025, making them easier to remember than iOS 19, watchOS 12, and macOS 16.

The operating systems are available as developer betas starting today and will be accessible to all users this fall.

Liquid Glass Design

Apple is redesigning its operating systems. They will now feature a new Liquid Glass theme that enhances transparency in buttons, switches, sliders, text, and media controls across their interfaces.

The date, time, and notification previews on the lock screen of iOS 26 beta will also showcase this new appearance, allowing you to see your wallpaper clearly behind the text.

New Look for a camera

As part of its extensive redesign, Apple announced updates for several of its core apps in iOS 26 beta. Web pages in Safari will now occupy the full screen. The Camera app has been simplified to display two main options — photo and video — with the ability to swipe on the toolbar to access other modes like Slow-Mo and Cinematic.

The Phone app is also receiving an enhancement, featuring a layout that merges favorites, recents, and voicemails into a single panel, while calls, contacts, and the keypad remain accessible at the bottom of the app.

iPadOS 26 will see a significant update aimed at improving multitasking. New windowing features will allow for resizing app windows, rearranging them on your display, and opening multiple windows simultaneously. Additionally, a more accurate mouse pointer and a new menu bar will be introduced, enabling you to swipe down on an app to view various options and commands, resembling a Mac-like experience.

Apple is refreshing Messages to allow users to change the background of their chats and create polls in group discussions. Other enhancements include typing indicators for group chats and the ability to filter messages from unknown senders, which will appear in a dedicated folder instead of the primary list.

A new Games app was announced that will enable users to access all their Apple Arcade games and find new titles from a unified location. The Library tab will display games downloaded from the App Store, and the Play Together option will let you challenge friends.

The upcoming macOS software update will introduce improvements to Spotlight, enhancing search results with personalization and filtering options to assist users in locating specific files, folders, apps, and messages. It will also allow actions such as sending an email or creating a note.

Apple is also bringing the Phone feature and the newly launched Games app to macOS 26, along with support for the iPhone’s Live Activities.

iOS 26 will introduce a new feature called Apple Intelligence, enabling users to invoke the AI assistant using the same buttons employed for taking a screenshot. From there, you can ask follow-up questions about your screen’s content using ChatGPT or search for particular objects on Google or Etsy to find similar images.

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders are now available — check out the latest restock information and retailers to monitor

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch next week, so we are approaching the final stretch of the pre-order phase. Unfortunately, it’s currently quite challenging to secure a pre-order for the Nintendo Switch 2.

The eagerly awaited hybrid console became available for pre-order last month in the U.S. and sold out within minutes. Although there have been a few restocks since then, they haven’t been significant. Several major retailers are now preparing stock in anticipation of the Switch 2’s launch on June 5, with confirmed restocks on release day at Best Buy, GameStop, and Target.

In the U.K., obtaining a Switch 2 pre-order has been relatively straightforward. While the console initially sold out, there have been numerous restocks since, some lasting several days. However, many major retailers have chosen to offer the Switch 2 in costly bundles, which might explain why some consoles have remained available for longer.

Nintendo Switch 2 price

Keep in mind, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released worldwide on June 5 and will have a price tag of $449 / £395, or $499 / £429 if bundled with a copy of Mario Kart World.

If you’re looking to secure a Switch 2 pre-order before next week, I’m here to provide you with the latest restock news and updates. With years of experience tracking stock for highly sought-after gaming products, I’m utilizing that knowledge to assist you in locking in your Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order as soon as possible.

Microsoft officially shuts down Skype today, with Teams taking its place

The company is ending the service of a popular video calling application. Microsoft purchased Skype in 2011, a platform that was launched in 2003.

Before the emergence of WhatsApp and Instagram, Skype was the primary choice for video calling, widely utilized for both personal and business communications. Microsoft has decided to discontinue Skype, effective today, May 5, and will concentrate solely on its Teams application, marking the retirement of Skype. This change was officially communicated back in February, as the tech giant aims to have Teams as its main free communication tool for consumers. Skype users can transition to Microsoft Teams easily, using their existing Skype credentials on any device that is supported.

Skype has officially ended its operations

Launched over twenty years ago in 2003 and acquired by Microsoft in 2011, Skype offered features such as video telephony, video conferencing, and voice calling based on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

Microsoft is also facilitating an easy transition for paying Skype users; they can use their Skype Credits and subscriptions through the end of their next renewal cycle, with Skype Credits lasting until they are fully utilized. Microsoft emphasizes that the shutdown will only affect free and paid account users, while Skype for Business accounts will remain unaffected.

Starting today, any remaining paid users will have access to the Skype Dial Pad exclusively through the Skype web portal and via Teams. Microsoft clarifies that the closure impacts users with free and paid accounts, but Skype for Business accounts will continue to operate.

Transitioning from Skype to Teams is simple. Users just need to sign into Teams with their Skype account, and all chats, contacts, and call history will be carried over. Microsoft Teams provides functionalities like one-on-one calls, group chats, group calls, and file sharing. Users will get a notification in the Skype app prompting them to manage their data migration. They have until January 2026 to switch, after which their data will be permanently erased.

Although Microsoft disclosed that there were still 36 million active users on Skype in 2023, the platform’s market share has declined over time. In contrast, Teams has seen extraordinary growth, nearly quadrupling in size over the past two years and providing similar, if not superior, features.

Notable investor acquires NVDA, noting exceptionally high demand for GPUs

Renowned investor Brad Gerstner recently informed CNBC that he has purchased shares of Nvidia (NVDA). He attributed this decision to the exceptionally high demand for GPU chips and President Donald Trump’s choice to exclude semiconductors from tariffs.

Gerstner is the founder of Altimeter Capital.

Gerstner’s Reasoning Behind Acquiring NVDA

“The demand for GPUs is unprecedented,” the investor remarked. “We are hearing this from companies like Google (GOOG), Tesla (TSLA), and others,” he further stated.

Gerstner pointed out that with Trump’s exemption of chips from tariffs, it seems likely that semiconductors will continue to avoid tariffs in the future.

“If we were to impose tariffs on the chips that we’ve designed and which are being purchased” by major U.S. companies, including Meta (META) and Microsoft (MSFT), “we would be impairing our own progress,” Gerstner explained. He emphasized that such a move could jeopardize America’s chances of succeeding in the AI competition.

In light of the tariff exemption that chips have received, Gerstner indicated that NVDA will be less affected by tariffs compared to many other technology companies.

Nevertheless, he warned that in the event of a U.S. recession, “even Nvidia may not perform as well.”

While we recognize NVDA’s potential, we firmly believe that AI stocks have a greater likelihood of providing higher returns in a shorter period. One AI stock has appreciated since the start of 2025, whereas popular AI stocks have dropped by about 25%. If you are in search of an AI stock that presents a more promising opportunity than NVDA and is trading at under 5 times its earnings, take a look at our report regarding the most affordable AI stock.

Intuitive Machines is making progress in private space exploration as it prepares for a moon landing attempt

Last year, the Houston-based space company became the first private firm to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon, but the mission faced challenges.

The company is gearing up for its second attempt at placing a spacecraft on the moon’s surface with its Athena lander, which is scheduled to land near Mons Mouton, a flat-topped mountain situated about 100 miles from the moon’s south pole, around 12:30 p.m. EST today.

An Expedition to Discover Water Ice by Intuitive Machines

Should this mission succeed, it will represent a significant advancement in commercial lunar exploration and bring NASA and private enterprises closer to discovering the mysteries of the moon’s south pole, where it is thought valuable water ice deposits may exist.

Athena, a solar-powered lander approximately 15 feet tall—comparable in height to a shorter adult giraffe—houses various scientific instruments. These include a drill created by NASA, designed to penetrate around three feet beneath the lunar surface in search of volatile compounds like water.

Certain craters located near the moon’s south pole are perpetually shrouded in darkness, leading scientists to believe that water ice might be concealed beneath the surface. This water could serve as an essential resource for future lunar bases, providing both drinking water and potentially fuel for spacecraft. Multiple nations are vying to be the first to investigate and possibly claim these resources.

A Team of Small Rovers

Although Athena will remain in a fixed position post-landing, it is equipped with a series of small rovers intended for lunar surface exploration.

One of the rovers, named Grace, is designed to hop over the moon’s surface with the assistance of a small rocket engine.

Another rover aims to navigate automatically across the rugged lunar landscape.

Japan’s Dymon Corporation has included a compact, rolling rover known as YAOKI, tasked with taking photographs of the landing area.

Landing on the moon poses significant challenges due to the absence of an atmosphere, which renders parachutes ineffective for reducing a spacecraft’s descent speed. Consequently, the lander must depend on precise thruster firings to direct itself for a safe landing—without real-time human intervention.

Due to the distance of the moon from Earth, communication delays prevent mission control from guiding the lander in real-time; therefore, Athena needs to autonomously navigate and land while avoiding obstacles such as rocks and craters.

Furthermore, commercial lunar missions frequently operate on tighter budgets compared to government-funded projects, resulting in a higher appetite for risk concerning mission failures. This heightened risk was demonstrated just yesterday when NASA lost communication with Lunar Trailblazer, which was traveling to the moon alongside Athena.

Intuitive Machines made headlines last year by being the first private entity to land a spacecraft on the moon, although the mission was not without issues. The lander miscalculated its descent, impacted the surface too forcefully, and toppled onto its side, thereby breaking a landing leg. This time around, the company is optimistic about achieving a smoother landing, applying the insights learned from its previous attempt.

The attempt by Intuitive Machines to land occurs mere days after another private firm, Firefly Aerospace, successfully accomplished its first moon landing. Both missions are part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, which aims to leverage private industry to accelerate lunar exploration.

If Athena successfully lands, it will be a significant achievement for commercial space endeavors and bring humanity closer to establishing a permanent presence on the moon.
